Healthcare Opportunities Abound as Industry Grows

By , About.com Guide

Training

The healthcare industry employs some highly educated occupations that often require many years of training beyond graduate school. However, most of the occupations in the healthcare industry require less than four years of college.

A practitioner that treats patients will most likely complete graduate school coupled with many years of education and training beyond college. A few healthcare workers need bachelor’s degrees like social workers, health service managers, and some RNs. A majority of the technologist and technician occupations require a certificate or an associate degree.

The healthcare industry also provides many job opportunities for people without specialized training. In fact, 47 percent of workers in nursing and residential care facilities have a high school diploma or less. Most healthcare workers that do not have postsecondary healthcare training and work directly with patients will receive some on-the-job training. These occupations include nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants; psychiatric aides; home health aides; physical therapist aides; and EKG technicians.
