Art activities and art appreciation can be vital parts of an activities program. The Assisted Living Federation of America ( ALFA) is now accepting artwork for the second annual ALFA Senior Living Art Showcase. The popular virtual art competition celebrates the creative talent and abilities of senior living residents by providing a unique platform for sharing and recognizing original works of art.
Besides gaining the intrinsic value of discovering a hidden talent, reigniting a former passion, or delighting in a lifelong hobby, the art showcase will provide a forum for residents to share their work, receive recognition by a national organization, and win prizes for themselves and their communities. Senior living residents may participate by submitting a digital photo of an original piece of art illustrating this year's theme, Celebrating the Beauty of Life. All types of visual art are welcome, including paintings, sculptures, quilting, photography, and mixed media. Entrants are encouraged to express individuality and creativity in producing a work of art that answers the question, "What adds beauty to your life?"
Selected entries that best embrace the theme will be featured on ALFA's Facebook page where friends, family, and the general public can vote for their favorites by clicking "like" under the photo of the artwork. The top three artists with the most Facebook "likes" will be named Fan Favorite winners, and ALFA will also choose three Grand Prize winners based on adherence to theme. All six talented winners will receive an assortment of premium art supplies to continue indulging their inner Van Gogh, a congratulatory painting party for the entire community, and national recognition honoring the individual's exceptional talent.
The deadline for submissions is February 25, 2013. Executive directors, activities directors, and other senior living professionals may submit digital images on behalf of residents by completing the online form available at alfa.org/submitart.
